Healing Trauma at Home: Supporting Families to Break the Cycle of Abuse

Trauma doesn’t end on the battlefield — it follows soldiers and families home. For many in Israel, the aftermath of war includes invisible scars: post-traumatic stress, strained marriages, and families struggling to hold together. Left unaddressed, trauma can escalate into anger, volatility, and even domestic abuse.

That’s why NA’AMAT USA supports programs that restore peace at home by addressing trauma’s impact on marriage and family.

When Trauma Comes Home

In 2006, Gavriela Kama Shir’s husband, a fighter in the Golani Brigade, returned from military service diagnosed with PTSD. Their marriage and young family nearly collapsed under the weight of his trauma. Gavriela shared:

“Together, we navigated the nightmares of trauma and learned how to support each other and our family through the healing process.”

Her story is not unique. Today, countless women face similar struggles as they balance their own stress with the volatility of partners returning from service or carrying the burden of war.

A Holistic Response: NA’AMAT’s Family Center

At the NA’AMAT Family Center in Tel Aviv, Director Yali Ben-Ami Vitenberg and her team provide:

  • Individual, couples, and family counseling
  • Group therapy and workshops
  • A women’s shelter and 24/7 crisis hotline
  • The Abba Program, helping fathers reintegrate and parent with empathy

This integrated model ensures that trauma is not ignored, but addressed in a way that heals both individuals and families.

Why This Matters for Preventing Domestic Abuse

Studies show a clear connection between exposure to violence, post-traumatic stress, and increased domestic abuse — as well as the ripple effect on children. By treating trauma early and holistically, NA’AMAT helps prevent cycles of abuse from taking root.
