Inside NA’AMAT’s Women’s Shelter: A Lifeline for Women and Children in Israel

When women and children flee abusive homes, they need more than just a roof over their heads. They need safety, healing, and the chance to rebuild. At the NA’AMAT Center for Women and Families in Tel Aviv, survivors find exactly that — a unique, holistic model of care that exists nowhere else in Israel.

A Safe Haven

Our women’s shelter provides refuge for up to 12 women and their children (ages 0–12). At the time of writing, 18 children are living at the shelter alongside their mothers. Families may stay anywhere from 3 to 18 months, giving them the time they need to recover and begin rebuilding their lives.

For each family, the shelter is more than temporary housing — it is the first step toward safety, stability, and independence.

Healing for Children

Children who witness or experience abuse carry invisible wounds. That’s why every child at our shelter is paired with a dedicated social worker who coordinates services, supervises visitations, and addresses emotional, behavioral, educational, and medical needs.

As one of our social workers explained:

“A child needs safety to develop. It takes a lot of work to restore trust between a child and his mother, between a child and the world… that didn’t or couldn’t protect him.”

The on-site Rhodie Blanshay Benaroch Children’s Centre provides therapy and childcare, including a Gymboree playroom where children can simply be children again.

Integrated Support Under One Roof

The shelter is part of a larger NA’AMAT Family Center, which also houses:

  • Our 24/7 anonymous Crisis Hotlines
  • Counseling services (individual, group, marriage, family)
  • The Abba Program, which equips fathers to be caring partners and parents

This integrated model means women and children have access not only to emergency shelter, but also to long-term resources that break the cycle of abuse.

And when women are ready to leave, NA’AMAT’s Day After program ensures they step into independence — with financial literacy, job training, parenting skills, and a supportive community.
